te ika a maui (THE SERIES)
This Painting is a reference to Te Ika a Maui, which today is considered to be called the North Island. The Puhoro pattern seen running from top to bottom is a reference to the navigational methods Māori used when travelling across the Pacific Ocean. The different tones of green seen on Te Ika a Maui are of some of the indigenous tribal regions of Aotearoa. The figures symbolise Tangata Whenua, indigenous people of this land Aotearoa.

The concept behind this art piece is about Māori Intelligence behind trench war fare, creating a well planed Paa site named Gate paa. The Kape Rua pattern used within this piece is a reference to the land and the dugout pits, used as hiding out areas within the pa site situated in Tauranga, Aotearoa. Māori educated the British troops in their war fare tactics, “The Bigger the gun, the deeper the hole”.
